General Motors Buick Century Chevrolet Celebrity Oldsmobile Ciera and: Buick Century, Chevrolet Celebrity, Oldsmobile Ciera and Cutlass Cruiser, Pontiac 6000, 1982-1996 (Haynes Automotive Repair Manual Series) by Haynes Publishing, Gradon Mechtel
Reviewer: JackCannon (Georgia, USA)
What happenned?
I have an '83 Celebrity, and had, in the past, purchased one Haynes manual for it (then, only shared info on the Celebrity, and it's identical Pontiac twin, the 6000) and one Chilton's Manual. BOTH of which I remember being quite helpful.
Unfortunately though, I seem to have lost them while moving, and had to invest in a replacement. Now I can't believe what I'm seeing between these covers.
Now for the record, I've always leaned towards Haynes to be more helpful and less simplistic in their technical approach. But in an effort to reduce the amount of product offerings (I'm guessing this as why) they have consolidated this and several other manuals to one single manual of normal thickness... having lost LOTS of weight in the details department.
There are entire engine configurations eliminated here... one can barely find MENTION of the 2.5 liter 4cyl... as much a staple of the Celeb as the 2.8 V6.
This "revision" STINKS.
I recommend any alternative.

Haynes General Motors N-Cars Automotive Repair Manual: Buick Skylark (1986 Thru 1998), Buick Somerset (1985 Thru 1987), Oldsmobile Achieva (1992 Thru ... ), Pontiac (Hayne's Automotive Repair Manual) by Richard Lindwall, John H. Haynes
Reviewer: Steven Swain (Rocky Mount, VA USA)
I actually purchased "Haynes General Motors N-Cars Automotive Repair Manual: Buick Skylark (1986 Thru 1998), Buick Somerset (1985 Thru 1987), Oldsmobile Achieva (1992 Thru 1998), Oldsmobile Calais (1985 Thru 1991), Pontiac (Haynes Automotive Repair Manual" for a friend of mine who owns a 1987 Buick Skylark with chronic problems, but I have read this book, as well as other Haynes titles, and I find it to be informative, well-planned and useful. The pictures and instructions are clear and relevant to the descriptions and are focused on the common (and unique) problems people face when fixing what ails these vehicles.
Believe you me, as a veteran of at least a half-dozen of these GM N-cars, I think the company should give these out free with each car.
If you're considering this book, go ahaead and get it. You'll thank me later.

Reviewer: "biedrzycki" (Pittsburgh, PA United States)
I found this book to be helpful in taking on small tasks such as doing your own brakes. In all, I would estimate this book saved me a few hundred dollars in repairs this year versus what I would have spent at the dealership or the local repair shop. (I was really upset when I found out how SIMPLE it is to replace disc brake pads) However, I would not use this manual for serious work, such as engine overhauls. In essence, this book is great for doing brakes, belts, spark plugs and minor troubleshooting. I would not depend on it for anything beyond such activities. Some of the chapters discuss engine overhauls and replacing struts. These are two pretty dangerous activities that the book sort of glazes over. They should have just left those things to the logic of "let somebody else seriously injure themselves doing this stuff".
It would have been nice for Haynes to include the Cadillac engine computer trouble codes, but you have to buy a seperate Haynes manual to get those.

Chevrolet Impala Ss & Caprice and Buick Roadmaster Automotive Repair Manual (Haynes Automotive Repair Manual Series) by Jeff Kibler, John Harold Haynes
Chevrolet Impala SS Caprice and Buick Roadster '91 - '96
Reviewer: www.9C1stuff.com (Kansas)
Although the Chevrolet 9C1 Caprice is about as durable and long lasting as a car can be something will break sooner or later. One can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars by doing what repairs he can without taking the car to a shop. This manual will help anyone make such repairs. Even if you do not repair your own car it will help you to better comprehend and diagnose any problems you may encounter. That will save you money by knowing what is wrong before being deceived by a dishonest repair shop. For those that do repair their own vehicles this book explains in great detail and understandable terminology what to do and how to do it. The Haynes manual is much easier to read and understand than the Chiltons books. The only drawback the Caprice manual is that it does not go into complete detail on the differences between the civilian Caprices and the 9C1 Police package Caprice. That aside it is well worth the cost. I have saved well over $5000 in repair cost over the 350,000 miles I have traveled with this book in my library.

Buick Muscle Cars (Motorbooks International Muscle Car Color History) by William G. Holder, et al
Reviewer: A reader
While there is some good information in this book, I was expecting more photos, especially of the various Wildcat and Invicta models and the various engine options offered in those vehicles. For instance, not one mention is made of the fact that "445" on a Wildcat engine was not only used in other vehicles, it also stood for the amount of torque the engine put out (and was *not* the cubic-inch displacement). The word "complete" used to describe this book was something of a misnomer...I found some information quite lacking here. Also, the writer(s) seemed a bit befuddled at times, and there are a few instances of incorrect information that have crept into the book. It's also hard to take it seriously where one Buick model is spelled incorrectly throughout the entire book (it's "Centurion," not "Centurian"...plainly visible on the first Centurion photo in the book). In all, there was little, if anything, I didn't already know about Buicks, and I'm far from an expert. For the price, I didn't feel it was worth the money. This one's "almost there," but a small disappointment to a fan of older "big engine" Buicks like myself.

California Bill's Chevrolet, GMC & Buick Speed Manual, 1954 Edition by Bill Fisher
Reviewer: D. Silvia (South Dartmouth, MA USA)
Long before the small block chevy hunted the streets, the GMC was the way to go. California Bill tells all. Fun to read, cool to browse, I'm always picking mine up. Turn up the way back machine Sherman and gaze at ancient speed parts offered by long forgotten manufacturers. It's an exact copy of the original and you don't have top worry about the binding falling apart. Very Cool.

Illustrated Buick Buyer's Guide: Cars from 1946 by Richard M Langworth
Reviewer: A reader
Its very rare to find a book about a subject you love that is this bad. Mr. Langworth the author of this book should be publicly flogged. To begin with the recommendations in this book are horribly dated. The author rated Buick Boattails a better investment that 60 era GS's. Furthermore the book didn't even mention the GSX. Mr. Langworth also stated that a 1972 Buick 455 produced 225 horses. If you love Buicks do not even think about this book. I can only apologize to mother nature that trees actually had to die to keep this dribble in print
Reviewer: Richard M Langworth (Hopkinton, NH USA)
Hell hath no fury like a buff whose favorite model is left out! Name Withheld should know that the NET bhp for the 1972 Buick 455 was 250, not 455 or 365, etc., because the industry standard went to net bhp in 1972. Since I was off by only 25 net horsepower I will submit to a private but not a public flogging. Book is better on 1940s and 1950s Buicks than that production-line stuff. And by the way, the word you want is "drivel" not "dribble."
