Iron Fist: The Lives of Carl Kiekhaefer by Jeffrey L. Rodengen, et al
Reviewer: nigelsteve from UK As anyone reading this review will know, Cark Kiekhaefer was one of the godfathers of the racing world. His Kiekhaefer 625 motors and Don Aronow's cigarette designs, decimated the competition for many years. The book made me appreciate just how hard he strived for success. It also brings to light a softer, more vulnerable side to Kiekhaefer that is endearing. I'm sure he probably would have been highly embarrassed. The book is a great account of a life that I believe would make a great movie. If you liked the offshore world of the 70's and 80's where monohulls and KAM power ruled - you should enjoy the book. The only drawback for me personally was that there weren't more pictures. |

Mariner Outboard Shop Manual: 2-220 Hp, 1976-1989 (Clymer Marine Repair Series) by Randy Stephens (Editor)
Reviewer: George Nicol from Milton, Florida This book offers very little help. Contents and index listings do not lead to needed information; information is hard to find, i.e. tork specs. Trouble shooting does not cover all scenerios. This is a good book if all you need is something to sit on a shelf and gather dust. |

The Legend of Mercury by Jeffrey L. Rodengen, et al
Reviewer: sam cullis from Annapolis, Maryland This book suffers less than most of Rodengen's work. His style of connecting his magazine articles into a complete book is improving. The coroprate history is accurate and for the most part complete. Still there is some of the redundancy of background supplied in each magazine article. Where I'd edit out 35% to 40% of the OMC book to make it easier to read and clearer, the Merc book only needs a 15% to 20% reduction to get to the point. Particularly disappointing in this book is the chapter on racing. Almost no research seems to have been done here. Merc's reputation was built on racing, but its a very small sideline in this book. I can not recommend the book to racing fans, not much more here than what is in Iron Fist. If you have none of the earlier books this would be a good place to start. |
