Honda made 4 PWC's for 2004. New for 2004 is the R-12, a 2 seater without the turbo. The three seater comes as the F-12 non turbo or the F-12X turbo. For 2004 you get a color choice! You can easily tell from a distance which 2004 Hondas have the turbo as they have a red or black hull, the non turbo versions all have a white hull. However it's hard to tell which are 2002 and which are 2004! I think the 2002 models all had white hulls. On top you have a choice of red or silver, if you pick silver you get a black or silver seat, the R-12X has a black seat. The red model has a red seat. The turbo has a new air filtration system and a relocated bilge strainer. The F models have a new hull shape and new air filtration system for 2004, and claim 10% better fuel mileage.
The 1235cc engine, made especially for the PWC, produces 125hp or 165hp when turbocharged. Honda also put an intercooler between the engine and turbo to cool the intake charge. Forged pistons and connecting rods are designed to hold up in the turbocharged versions, which have 8.5:1 compression, while the non turbo has 11:1 compression. Honda went all out with this engine. External oil tank lets the engine sit low in the hull for better balance, and speaking of balance, while a 4 cylinder inline engine doesn't vibrate much to start with, Honda included gear driven balancers to eliminate any vibration. Waterproof ignition system has 4 transitorized direct-ignition coils integrated into the spark plug caps! No high voltage wires to short out when they get wet. Double overhead cams and 4 valves per cylinder provide the air, while high pressure fuel injection pushes the gas through 4 jets per injector. 2004 Honda 1235cc 4 stroke 4 cylinder 4 valves per cylinder fuel injected 165 hp turbocharged engine

2004 Honda AquaTrax turbo charger

The turbocharger was designed for marine duty, both oil AND water cooled for dependable operation and a denser intake charge for maximum power. An enclosed pressure lubricated ceramic ball bearing provides for sustained high speed operation, but the engine only turns 6,000 - 6,800 rpm max, this thing is built to last. The turbo mounts right behind the engine and is easy to access. Speaking of access, the Hondas have removable panels on both sides below the seat for engine access! Few other PWC's have this feature, what a great idea!
